Wardy used both dry charcoal sticks and ones dipped in water for the works on paper (1 to 9). They predate the reliefs. In preparing the canvas units of the reliefs, he left the edges of the canvas unpainted to give more definition to each unit.
The reliefs made of torn newsprint from The New York Times and black construction paper followed. He painted areas of black along the sides of the strips of wood to set them off from the newsprint and ensure their ongoing dominance.
