13. 1986 to 1987
Acrylic on canvas (8 selections)
In the fall of 1986, Wardy produced large works like numbers 1 and 2. While the intensity, saturation, and choice of colors show a kinship with the works in Category 12, a noteworthy change occurs with the areas of white and free lines either in the white or on the surface of colors.
Wardy began this series in the summer of 1986 when he rented a large former classroom on the second floor of the Dungeness Old Schoolhouse in Dungeness, Washington, outside of the town of Sequim, adjacent to the Dungeness River and near the coastline of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The schoolhouse became a Washington State Historical Site in 1971 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. See Profile (once opened) for a photograph of the building (Fig.12) and of Wardy in 1986, holding his six-month old daughter, with works in progress on the floor. He lived nearby and usually had the whole quiet building to himself over several summers.
